Winter Reads

Snow is predicted. Here in East Tennessee we don't get snow often, except in the mountains, but this weekend we may get 1-5 inches. I'm sure that doesn't seem like much to my friends in the North, but it is bound to make travel complicated here. It was the perfect time for me to read about snowflake photography, which is featured in Kiri Jorgensen's new middle-grade novel, Perfect. Twelve-year-old Sal deals with multiple personal and friendship issues. Her fascination with snowflake photography adds a unique and fascinating dimension, and there's a mystery to solve, as well. You can find the book and an accompanying novel study unit at Chicken Scratch Books. And while you're there, check out my latest, A Kidnapping in Kentucky, 1776, which also has novel units available.
Here's a great website all about snowflakes: SnowCrystals.com
SPEAKING OF SNOWFLAKES: "How full of the creative genius is the air in which these are generated! I should hardly admire more if real stars fell and lodged on my coat." Henry David Thoreau, 1856
NEED A GREAT ADULT BOOK? I just finished reading Delicious by Ruth Reichl. It's not a cookbook, but rather a book about the world of fine cooking and eating. Here's a book set in the upscale world of elegant restaurants and the foods they serve -- with an unexpected mystery included, two mysteries, in fact. This book will introduce you to new ways of thinking about food, but will not add psychological or political stresses to your already stressed life. It's a relaxing bedtime read if you can put it down and turn out the light. I kept reading because reading was far more fun than snoozing.
BOOKS CHANGE THE WORLD. "Books showed me there were possibilities in life, that there were actually people like me living in a world I could not only aspire to but attain. Reading gave me hope. For me, it was the open door."– Oprah Winfrey
